The new century has seen the normalization of the relationship between New Zealand and U.S.Eventually recovering from the shocks and setbacks caused by New Zealand anti-nuclear policy in mid of 1980s,the two sides have established good contacts and cooperation in the fields like trade, diplomacy, regional issues and global issues. In the process, the evolution of power balance driven by the rapid rise of China and the strategy changes of U.S.and China toward the region have given the new impetus and urgency for U.S.and New Zealand to develop their relations. However, the elements of global balance of powers and China still play a limited role in the U.S.-New Zealand relations, instead of dictating the nature and changes of the relationship. And Trump administration has brought new uncertainty to the relations. In near future,it is unlikely that New Zealand will restore formal alliance with U.S.,especially an alliance against China.Instead,it will maintain the independence and autonomy on international stage, pursuing comprehensive relations and cooperation both with U.S.and China.
