公共外交是全球化时代世界各国塑造国家形象、提升影响力的重要手段。随着中国海洋大国战略的推进，中国亟须赢得南太平洋岛国对中国发展的理解、信任和支持。斐济作为重要的南太平洋岛国，在中国与南太平洋岛国关系的发展中有积极的示范效应。近年来中国通过文化教育交流、华侨华人公共外交、援助外交及孔子学院等一系列公共外交项目的运作，增进了斐济民众对中国的了解，促进了中国与斐济友好合作关系的发展。不过，由于中国传统公共外交的不足以及大国竞争性公共外交的影响，中国在斐济及在南太平洋岛国的感召力和影响力仍显不足。
In the era of globalization，public diplomacy is playing an important role in shaping national image and enhancing national impact. With the promoting of China’s great power and ocean strategy，we really need to gain the understanding，trust and support of the South Pacific Island countries for China’s development. As an important country in the South Pacific area，the Republic of the Fiji Islands has a strong demonstration effect. In recent years，though the development of cultural diplomacy，overseas Chinese public diplomacy，economic aid diplomacy and Confucius Institutes diplomacy，China has obtained understanding of the Fiji people and promotes the relations of friendly cooperation with Fiji. However，due to the shortage of Chinese traditional public diplomacy，coupled with the existence of great power competitive public diplomacy，China’s exhortation and influence over Fiji and other South Pacific island countries are still inadequate.
