This study adopts the urban centrality, field strength and economic relation force model and Wilson Index to explore the spatial structure and integrated development level of the Chongqing metropolitan area and put forward the paths of integrated development for metropolitan areas. The results show that:(1) The Chongqing metropolitan area has an urban spatial structure of “the central city + peripheral affected zones”;(2) The spatial pattern of “the central city” (the built-up area in the main city) is extended mainly westward and northward along the focused paths of “Yubei District,Shapingba District,Nan’an District → Jiangbei District,Shapingba District → Jiangbei District,Yubei District and Beibei District”;the spatial economic relations in the peripheral affected areas of the metropolitan area is continuously strengthened;(3) The comprehensive integration level of the Chongqing metropolitan area has been significantly improved since Chongqing became a municipality, which is closely related to the spatial expansion of the built-up area, the varying economic development levels, national strategies and government policies;(4) The key path for the integrated development of the Chongqing metropolitan area is to construct a spatial pattern of “one city-five districts-multi-center groups”.
