In 2018,the Central Mediterranean Route saw the smallest number of irregular entries into EU since 2012 and Italy played a significant part in the migration control and management on this route. With the downward of migratory flows and the ascent of the M5S-Lega alliance to power,Italian Migration Control opened a new chapter. This essay aims to provide a review on the efforts of the Italian authorities, their outcomes and drawbacks in dealing with immigration issues. The caretaker cabinet headed by Gentiloni has laid a solid foundation for the successors. While closing Italian ports to NGO ships and decreasing unwanted landings,Matteo Salvini, the new Minister of Interior has also brought about humanitarian crisis and accusations from the international community. Italy has made positive achievements in its cooperation with Libya and Tunisia,in border controls and repatriations of irregular migrants. Rather than solving security as well as immigration problems,Salvini’s Security and Immigration Decree will pose a huge threat to Italian public security. It is predictable that in the near future, the Italian Government, while defending national interests with harsh measures, will be facing tough challenges in human rights protection, public security, repatriation of irregular immigrants, internal solidarity and so forth.
