2018年10月俄罗斯东正教会决定与君士坦丁堡牧首区断绝关系。双方走上决裂的原因是他们对乌克兰教会独立问题持不同态度。乌克兰教会独立进一步激化了乌克兰国内矛盾，恶化俄乌关系，降低俄罗斯东正教会在东正教世界的影响力。美国希望借此削弱俄罗斯的势力，以达到在一些俄美有争议的国际问题上进一步钳制俄罗斯的目的。
In October 2018， the Russian Orthodox Church decided to make a disengage from the Constantinople Patriarchate. The reason for the split is that they have different attitudes toward the independence issue of the Ukrainian Church. The independence of the Ukrainian Church is bound to intensify the domestic contradictions in Ukraine， worsen the relations between Russia and Ukraine， and reduce the influence of the Russian Orthodox Church in the Orthodox world. The United States wishes to weaken Russia's power in this way and thus contain Russia more efficiently.
