2017年特朗普就任总统以来，采取了一系列以“买美国货，雇美国人”为基本原则和以保护主义为基调的社会经济政策，例如打击非法移民、缩减合法移民等，在医改方案受挫之时转而关注鸦片药物危机。尽管2017年美国多项经济数字表现良好，但弗吉尼亚族群冲突、枪击案频发且死伤严重、“#MeToo”女权运动兴起等事件表明，特朗普政府推行的上述政策并未对美国国内社会分裂进行有效弥合，形成了美国经济社会不平等与政治回应不平等之间的恶性循环，并很有可能使美国目前机会平等基础丧失的趋势变得根深蒂固和不可逆。
President Trump since his inauguration pursued a series of social policy of protectionism with the underlying principle of “buy American and hire American”，such as anti-illegal immigration and reduce legal immigration. He also turned focus on drug addiction while his version of medical reform suffered setback. Although the economic performance is good in 2017，the racial conflicts，like the typical riots in Virginia，the worsening mass shooting，and the #MeToo movement，etc. prove that the measures taken by Trump failed to narrow the division within American society，but only widened the gap between social inequality and political responses. As the way goes，the basic break down of opportunity equality would be irreversible.
