The purpose of this paper is firstly to analyze empirically the structural change of industry in the metropolitan area of Tokyo. Then how the change has effected on the spatial reorganization will be discussed. And finally the contemporary meaning of a newly emerging spatial system will be clarified. The regional characteristics of industries in the Tokyo metropolitan area have shifted to processed assembly type except for Chiba-ken of basic material type. The largest production area also changes from Tokyo-to to Kanagawa-ken and further to Saitama-ken in conjunction with urban development in this area. As specialization coefficients, for knowledge and technology intensive industries such as information and communication industry in Tokyo-to,academic and research institutes in Kanagawa-ken,warehouse industry in Saitama-ken,air transport, steel and entertainment industry in Chiba-ken are high, regional division of labor can be seen. Recent industrial shifts have contributed to strengthen even more extensive and hierarchical spatial structure. As result,a new rationally and functionally integrated mega-city space where the brain and the electronic brain are combined, which exceeds the paradigm of the past,is emerging.
