During Ming and Qing Dynasties, Xiangshan area, which included present Zhongshan, Zhuhai and Macao, was an economically and culturally developed area in the Pearl River Delta. Macao was the outport of Guangzhou, the primary node of Guangdong's maritime trade and international communication, and the important hub of Maritime Silk Road. With the development of the early globalization and the establishment of the world maritime trade system, Xiangshan and Macao had become the important gateway for Guangdong and even the whole country to go to the sea and the world. The land route “Qi Ao ancient road”, which connected Shiqi and Macao, was the golden section leading to Sea for Guangdong. It was both the important channel for Guangdong government to administer Xiangshan and Macao and manage the coastal defences, and the important traffic routes for villagers of Xiangshan and surrounding areas to Macao in Qing Dynasty. They went to Macao for trade, settlement, or to Hongkong or overseas via Macao. They made the history of development of Xiangshan and integrated the Maritime Silk Road with local villagers who lived in the area nearby.
