1972年，澳大利亚与中国建立外交关系，到2017年已经走过45年历程。中国现在是澳大利亚最大的货物贸易伙伴，两国投资关系不断加强，人文合作涵盖旅游、教育和移民等领域，同时两国防务合作也有所发展。两国文化关系的发展也令人瞩目。政治-战略关系同样保持良好。两国建交45年来澳中关系发生了深刻变化，各个方面不断向好。各种交流在1972年之前是难以想象的，如今都已成为现实。尽管45年来两国关系曾有些许波折，甚至当前也有困难和问题存在，但澳大利亚和中国之间的友好关系不断发展的趋势不会改变，而且将来会发展得比现在更好。
The year 2017 marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Australia and China in 1972. China is now Australia’s largest merchandise trading partner by far and there is a growing investment relationship，alongside people-to-people ties encompassing tourism，education and migration，and developing defence ties. In terms of cultural relations，development has also been spectacular. Politico-strategic relations are also very good. Problems remain，we can do better. But the situation is far from hopeless. Australia and China now enjoy a thriving and friendly relationship，with expectations that it will get even better than it is at present.
