Since the start of Donald Trump's presidency,the United States' policy towards the Asia-Pacific region has demonstrated both continuity and disjointedness,with implications for the orientation of Australia's relations with China.The article points out the anachronism and limitations of Hugh White's thesis regarding the “China choice” and contends that faced with new challenges in the region,Canberra has been reframing and recalibrating its foreign policy in line with the Indo-Pacific,rather than the Asia-Pacific,concept.In doing so,Canberra has been developing a multi-pronged and multi-dimensional regional policy to enhance its independence and diplomatic leverage,in an effort to minimize reliance on either the US or China.
