The unsmooth circulation of Portuguese language in Macau was mainly due to historical reasons such as its business coverage being less extensive than English and promotion strategies adopted by the former Portuguese-Macau Administration being incorrect.This resulted in a small base of proficient Portuguese speakers of non-ethnic Portuguese origin.The Macau Special Administrative Region Government attempts to adopt a language promotion strategy through fostering local Portuguese language education professionals first，then enhancing language education to expand the base for circulation，hoping that the target set forth by the Five-Year Development Plan of the Macau Special Administrative Region（2016-2020）could be achieved in the shortest possible period of time.This article explores the basic situation on the use of Portuguese language by the local population and Portuguese language education in Macau，and discusses the main problems concerning Portuguese language education and circulation，as well as their influence on realising the development strategies of the Special Administrative Region.
