China-Malaysia diplomatic relationship in the modern era officially began on May 31,1974,but in fact both have had a relationship as early as 100 or 200 years B.C. Historical evidence shows that China emperors have sent officials to some part of Malay Archipelago, south Asia and west Asia at that time. In the seventh century,Yi Jing,a great Buddhist scholar visited and stayed six months in the capital city of Sriwijaya, the old Malay kingdom in Sumatera. His report about Sriwijaya included the activity of Buddhism teaching, the administrative system and cultural facts about that kingdom. China - Malay world relationship then became a government to government contact in the 15th and 16th centruries when Dynasty Ming’s emperors sent Admiral Zheng He and other officials to Melaka Malay Kingdom several times and the kings of Melaka visited China a few times. The bilateral cooperation did not only involve politics and economy but language and culture as well. The department of translation and interpretation and the language academy of foreign languages, established by Ming Dynasty included the Malay language as one of the important foreign languages. The Chinese scholars at that time compiled a Chinese - Malay dictionary, comprising of 482 entries which covered 17 domains of Malay civilization. The relationship of RRC and Malaysia in the modern era marked the continuity of the past historical and harmonious contact in all domains of civilization, namely politics, economy, education, culture etc. It is based on the spirit that this article was written, revisiting some episodes of the relationship, back to the early history and in current development. Besides, some operational suggestions are included in the last part of the article.
