Guo Shengbo and Liu Guiqi quoted and extended some of my arguments，in the article “The Gross-roots Establishment of Xiangshan County and its Relevant Issues in the Qing Dynasty”（Studies of Maritime History，Vol.8），deviated from my intention.I explore the gongyue and gongju of Xiangshan County，just provide a case for the study of the rural communities in the late Qing years，rather than specialize in Gross-roots Establishment. As the conceptions of “Zuo za fen fang zhi（佐杂分防制）” mentioned by Guo Shengbo and Liu Guiqi in their article，according to Qing laws and some materials of Xiangshan County in the late Qing years，I doubt whether such a system really exists.
