The Brunei Armed Forces were established in 1961 as the "Brunei Malay Regiment" and renamed the "Royal Malay Regiment of Brunei" in 1965. The military department of the Ministry of National Defense is divided into six bureaus, including the Office of the Minister of Defense and the Bureau of Strategic Planning, and five bureaus, including the Development and Engineering Services Bureau, under the civilian department. Brunei's per capita defense spending ranks second in Asia after Singapore. The Royal Brunei Armed Forces are made up of active duty forces and reserve organisations, including the Royal Brunei Army, the Royal Brunei Navy, the Royal Brunei Air Force, and the Royal Brunei Police Force is a paramilitary force in the country. Brunei's defence capabilities have been strengthened through technical and training cooperation with Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand and South Asia.
