2014年莫迪政府上台后，美印两国在国防合作领域进展迅速。美国印太战略的提出、印度的战略考量以及印度与俄罗斯国防合作动力不足等因素共同促进了美印国防合作的进展。美印国防合作涉及联合军演、军品贸易以及技术转让等多方面。未来，美印国防合作的发展主要体现在三个方面：确保《美印国防技术与贸易倡议》的可持续发展、合理解决知识产权分歧以及推动海洋安全合作向纵深发展。鉴于印度一直奉行独立自主的外交政策，未来美印国防合作将不会一帆风顺。
The US and India made rapid progress in defense cooperation after Modi administration came to power in 2014. Three elements together promoted US-India defense cooperation：the putting forward of US Indo-Pacific Strategy，India’s strategic considerations and the under-powered India-Russia defense cooperation. The US-India defense cooperation is being unfolded in many aspects，such as joint exercises，military products trade，technology transfer，etc. In the future，US-India defense cooperation could be developed in three aspects：ensuring the sustainable development of the Defense Technology and Trade Initiative，making settlement of intellectual property divergence and promoting marine security cooperation in depth. In spite of the prospect of cooperation，the U.S.-India defense cooperation would not develop smoothly due to India’s insistence on foreign policy of absolute independence.
