In the Huluo Debate in the history of Korean Confucianism, the theory of“Unified nature of human and matter” is one of great contestations. It was developed by the Jihu School in early 18th century. This theory on the debate of whether “matter” possesses morals and values. However, all arguments agree on the existence of the morality of “matter”,especially the idea that nature and all things around us possess the same kind of morality and hence should be treated with the same amount of moral respect, care and concern as all human beings. Such ideas of equality can be seen from the sayings like:“Every matter exists in the natural heaven and possesses the nature of heaven”,“Human is overvalued than matter from the view of human while matter is overvalued than human from the perspective of matter. But in the view of heaven, human and matter equal”. The way of Heaven exists not only for human beings, but also in all of nature’s creations, hence all things in nature are as valuable and treasured as humanity itself. We could even go as far as to say that from the point of view of nature and the entire ecosystem, other things or life forms in nature are even more valuable than humanity. The main reason for environmental degradation comes from human beings, who selfishly plunder resources and cause destruction to other life forms. This trend towards environmentalism provides us with a good reference and base for us to look beyond our anthropocentric ideals and address environmental problems.
