Sustainable development,as a new development concept and model, experienced in Germany a process from strange to familiar.Sustainable urban development is one of the keys of Germany's sustainable development strategy. The city is the main part of sustainable development as well as a participant. After the period during which the government made the policy concerning sustainability, more and more, the sustainable urban development in Germany is enduring a period of slow development.A few cities became prime examples of sustainable urban development, but according the "three pillars"-goal(economy,society and environment),Germany has not obtained the sought after effects. The demographic structure and urban social problems increased the pressure on sustainable development.Climate issues are becoming more important in urban development. At this stage, the greatest impediments to sustainable urban development are the financial shortfalls in local governments, the shrinking federal financial subsidies, and the European debt crisis.
