2008年澳大利亚总理提出建立“亚洲太平洋共同体”，通过地区大国的协调，应对地区政治、经济和安全方面的问题。然而，新的泛地区合作与现有地区合作的关系、东盟的地区作用，以及对地区成员的利益，都还存在诸多问题。因此，亚太共同体的建设将是渐进和漫长的，政府推进是必要的，同时也要考虑到世界经济和政治格局的变化。
Australia has suggested the Asia-Pacific Community in 2008，consisting of the main players in the region in dealing with the regional economic，political and security issues. Though this pan-regional community will be more comprehensively covering the all important areas，it is facing the problems how to coordinate the relations with the existing regional cooperation and members’ interests concerned，as well as the Asean’s regional role. Therefore，the Community building will be a long term task with the main promotion from the governments in the region，in addition to the world economic and political evolution.
