The question of Western Sahara originated from the legacy of colonial history, developed in the geopolitical game of the regional powers in North Africa, and further complicated by the intervention of international powers, particularly the United States and France. In July 2024,Macron explicitly supported Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, hoping to strengthen bilateral relations with Morocco through the “double-wheeled drive” of political statements and economic investment, and to reshape France’s influence in North Africa. The essence of the Macron administration’s policy adjustment in Western Sahara is a strategic trade-off of the relationships between France and Morocco,as well as between France and Algeria, and a reorganization of its strategic layout in North Africa. This adjustment in the short term has led to warming Franco-Moroccan relations, but it has also caused Franco-Algerian relations to deteriorate and intensified the confrontation between these two countries over the Western Sahara. Although France claims to promote a political solution to the question of Western Sahara,it has tended to hinder the resolution of this issue by exacerbating regional contradictions and divisions in the international community. And the future development of the situation remains to be seen.
