The interaction and exchange within East Asia’s maritime sphere during the Song and Yuan dynasties(960-1368)evolved from the foundations laid by maritime activities of the 7th to 9th centuries. This era saw significant expansion in the East Asian trade network facilitated by maritime routes. The East China Sea and South China Sea routes, initially established during the Sui-Tang and Five Dynasties periods, were further extended and integrated during the Song and Yuan dynasties, giving rise to a West Pacific-Indian Ocean trade network. The Song and Yuan governments actively supported the flourishing overseas trade, increasingly intervening in maritime exchanges and fostering notable changes in the mechanisms of interaction. The resulting maritime networks, shaped by state involvement, became a structural hallmark of East Asian maritime interaction during this period.
