Myth is the origin of national spirit, and the “Izumo Myth” recorded in the Kojiki and Nihonshoki is an important part of Shinto, the national religion of Japan. Based on religious theories and the author’s field research, this paper examines the characteristics of the Izumo Myth from the perspectives of the origin of the Izumo Myth,Izumo Taisha,Izumo Taishaism, rituals, kagura, and literature. The Japanese god,Susanoo no Mikoto,is a typical example of the paradoxical phenomenon of “both good and evil”,and Daikoku’s main life has been revered by the people as a god of good fortune that blesses the people with happiness. After the Meiji Restoration, the “national Shinto religion” made bad use of the myths and made the myths serve the war of aggression, and the Izumo myths became a muddy stream. After World War II,according to the Shinto Directive,Izumo mythology recovered its original character as a folk religion that strengthens national cohesion, and the simple folk poetic feeling of Izumo resurfaced.
