The southern border area of Spain, due to its unique geographical location and political environment, has become one of the major maritime migration routes in Europe. Since the “canoe crisis” and economic crisis in the early 21st century, the migration flow in this region has become increasingly complex. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the economic and social predicaments of the source countries of immigrants, and has also exposed Spain’s deficiencies in border control, international protection and social integration. Furthermore, the gender and age composition of the immigrant group is increasingly diverse, with the proportion of women and minors rising significantly, further highlighting the special vulnerability of this group. This article analyzes the development status of immigration dynamics at the southern border of Spain, reveals the main challenges faced by immigrant groups in the process of asylum application and social integration, and puts forward policy suggestions for strengthening legal entry channels, optimizing administrative procedures and reducing social discrimination.
