As a landlocked country, the development of transportation infrastructure is crucial to Laos economic and social development. Since its independence in 1975,the Lao government has attached great importance to the development of infrastructure, especially transportation infrastructure, put forward a national development strategy of transforming from a “land-locked country” to a “land-linked country”,and invested a great amount of money in strengthening regional connectivity. In order to promote the transformation of a “land-linked country”,Laos has focused on infrastructure construction and actively participated in international cooperation by relying on cooperation frameworks such as the Greater Mekong Sub-Region Economic cooperation and the Belt and Road Initiative. With assistance from international organizations such as the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency,as well as from China,Japan,Australia,Thailand,Vietnam and other countries,Laos is gradually improving the quality and accessibility of its transport infrastructure. With the steady progress of the China-Laos Economic Corridor and the completion of major infrastructure projects such as the China-Laos Railway, the strategic vision of Laos as a land-linked country is becoming a reality.
