North America’s rich higher education resources have long attracted large numbers of international students. In recent years, the number of Chinese students studying in the U.S. and Canada has declined significantly in response to changes in U.S.-China relations. However, the U.S. remains the top destination for Chinese students, with the number of Chinese students in the U.S. continuing to decline in the 2023-2024 academic year, and the number of Indian students studying in the U.S. already exceeding that of China. In Canada,on the other hand, the number of international students from China is much lower than the Indian student population. Chinese international students to North America mainly choose STEM(science, technology, engineering, and math)and business administration disciplines. In the long term, international students bring a large number of employment opportunities to North America and have a sustained impact on local economic development. For this reason, the U.S. and Canadian governments have also supported international students to study and develop in North America through measures and policies such as broadening STEM fields.
