In celebration of the Golden Jubilee, marking the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Malaysia and China,it is pertinent to revisit the history of early relations between China and the Malay Archipelago, representing two significant civilizations in Asia. This report traces the earliest phase of these relations based on historical sources, particularly those inherited from past Chinese dynasties dating back to circa 200 years before Christ. It is evident that China has had relations with various places in the Malay Archipelago since that time. More apparent evidence shows that during the 7th century, both civilizations interacted significantly, especially between Tang Dynasty and Sriwijaya Kingdom as well as Old Kedah within the Malay Archipelago. The peak of these relations was marked by diplomatic ties between Ming Dynasty and Melaka Sultanate in the 15th century, covering a wide range of aspects including economy, politics, language, and culture. The modern-day diplomatic relations established between Malaysia and People’s Republic of China on May 31st,1974 are a continuation of this historical episode spanning over 2,000 years. Therefore, this report also discusses developments after 50 years since diplomatic relation was established with special reference to education and culture in strengthening bilateral ties between Malaysia and People’s Republic of China.
