In 2023,the French Government’s policy towards the Pacific Island region will be characterized by new trends. As the “Indo-Pacific” region is gaining importance in the global governance system,France has deepened its presence in the region through the development and adaptation of its “Indo-Pacific Strategy”. France’s policy focuses on safeguarding the interests of its overseas territories, while at the same time focusing on low-political areas such as climate change and biodiversity conservation in order to enhance its soft power and international image. Through its diplomatic, military, environmental protection, cultural and scientific cooperation efforts,France seeks to increase its influence in the Pacific Island region and reassert itself as a major power in the “Indo-Pacific”. However,in advancing its policies,France also faces challenges and dilemmas arising from geographical distance, resource constraints, competition with other Powers and its colonial past.
