In the Philippines,Buddhists are mainly Chinese. Buddhism entered the Philippines along with the immigrants from the southern Fujian in modern times, but the official practice of the monastery system began in the 1930s. After the Second World War,with the development of Chinese economy and the localization of Chinese community,Buddhism developed rapidly, and the temples expanded to all parts of the country. At present, with the ethnic integration and intergenerational turnover of the Filipino-Chinese,traditional Buddhism faces serious problems of believers’ shrinking, lack of monks, and belief’s decline, but the new Buddhist religious groups which entered the Philippines from Taiwan area around the 1990s such as Foguangshan and Tzu Chi are much more active, and their practice will be enlightening for the reform of traditional Buddhism.
