2023 is an election year in New Zealand, with policymakers and the public paying more attention to domestic political issues than foreign ones. The economy has begun to decline, with high cost of living issues exacerbated and the impact of natural disasters hitting many industries hard. The ruling Labour Party was defeated for a second term in the general election, and the National Party came to power in a coalition with a friendly party, the Action Party, and the Priority Party, which returned to Parliament. The Priority Party leadership’s history of rivalry with the other two parties and divergent views on some issues made the coalition challenging. On the diplomatic front,New Zealand’s assessment of the strategic environment has changed, resulting in a comprehensive consolidation of relations with Pacific countries while emphasising traditional principles of multilateralism and independent diplomacy. Greater emphasis has been placed on relations with security partners while pursuing stable and diversified economic relations.
