In 2023,the general economic situation in Oceania diverged. Despite issues such as high inflation and interest rate hikes plaguing all regional countries,Pacific island countries, mainly due to the resurgence of tourism, achieved relatively high economic growth rates. Australia and New Zealand experienced sluggish economic growth but also demonstrated resilience undergirded by low unemployment rate and booming international trade. Politically, internal affairs in Oceanian countries remained generally stable. However, persistent economic and social issues fueled demands for political change in some regional countries, leading to power transitions in New Zealand, the Marshall Islands,Vanuatu, and Nauru. Regarding foreign policy,Oceanian countries struggled to maintain autonomy amid intensive geopolitical and economic pressures, sparing no effort to comprehensively develop foreign relations in a balanced way. The momentum of improvement in Sino-Australian ties continued throughout the year. The Pacific Islands Forum also garnered considerable attention as memember states effectively ironed out division and consolidated regional cooperation in the end. However, regional countries struggled to reach a unified stance on important issues such as Japan’s discharge of nuclear wastewater into the ocean and deep-sea mining, indicating ongoing challenges in regional integration.
