In recent years,Japanese government has increasingly prioritized the application of politico-security paradigms to guide or intervene in the nation’s external economic engagements. Within this context, the Kishidaadministration has undertaken a reconfiguration of the critical supply chain’s geographical architecture, bolstering regional and international collaborative efforts pertaining to supply chain resilience. Additionally, there has been a heightened regulation of sensitive technologies and information dissemination to expedite the fortification of strategic economic security measures. The Kishida administration has harnessed Japan’s accumulated intellectual capital on issues of economic security, endeavoring to navigate the current economic uncertainties while simultaneously propelling a strategic transformation of Japan’s industrial and national development paradigms. Furthermore,it seeks to advance its vision of a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific”(FOIP). Despite these initiatives, the Kishida administration enhanced economic security strategy is confronted with several intrinsic challenges. These include a potential disequilibrium between domestic economic security and economic growth, the paradoxical constraint of “strategic autonomy” within a framework of “strategic alignment” with the United States, intensification of regional economic and politico-security dilemmas, and the potential erosion of Japan’s foundational structural power. The efficacy of these strategies and their implications for Sino-Japanese relations warrant further scrutiny and scholarly investigation.
