Latakia and Tartus are port cities located on the western coast of Syria. In the pre-Islamic period, both cities were representative of Phoenician culture. After the introduction of Islam, both became platforms for Muslims and Christians to engage in war and peace. In modern times and after the establishment of the state, especially during the Syrian Civil War,Latakia and Tartus played a special role in the civil war due to the Syrian-Russian relationship. It can be said that the historical development of the two cities has certain similarities and dualities. In peacetime,Latakia and Tartus were the hub of Syria’s access to the Mediterranean Sea and were important in promoting, among other things, civilization interaction between Syria at different times. In times of war,Latakia and Tartus were the focus of contention between various parties, both during the historical Crusades and the Syrian Civil War,and both cities were behind the wars with extraterritorial forces, and the cities themselves played a role in different historical processes that could not be ignored.
