In 2022,significant progress was made in the EU accession process of Western Balkan states. Accession negotiations were initiated with North Macedonia and Albania, fulfilling their dreams after waiting for 17 and 8 years, respectively. Bosnia and Herzegovina officially obtained the candidacy status, taking a major step forward just 6 years after submitting its membership application. However, the accession progress of Montenegro and Serbia has been minimal, and the decision on Kosovo visa liberalization is still pending. The notable progress in the accession of Western Balkans is strongly linked to the changing geopolitical landscape of Europe triggered by the Russia-Ukraine Conflict. This raises the question of whether it signifies an acceleration of the accession of Western Balkans or a shift in the EU enlargement process,a question that deserves further exploration.
