Shōgaku,as a foundational educational text of Zhu Xi’s philosophy, was introduced to Japan as early as the Kamakura period. In the early Edo period, the Kainan Zhu Xi school, the Kimon school,as well as scholars like Kaibara Ekken and Nakamura Tekisai from the Kaisai Zhu Xi school, created corresponding adaptations and commentaries based on Shōgaku. They engaged in annotations and localization studies, promoting the widespread acceptance and dissemination of Shōgaku in early modern Japan. Studying the transmission of Shōgaku in this context provides a valuable case for understanding the reception and transformation of Zhu Xi’s thought in Japan.
