Kojiki and Nihon Shoki were only written eight years apart. But why should two historical books with almost the same content be written in such a short period of time? This has become a big problem plaguing Japanese academia, and was hailed by Sakamoto Taro as “a long-standing difficult problem”. Nowadays,Japanese academic circles generally believe that Kojiki is oriented towards Japan(internally),while Nihon Shoki is oriented to foreign countries(externally). However, this view ignores a very important question:Since the Nihon Shoki is aimed at foreign countries, why has the Nihon Shoki not spread to China,North Korea and other Asian neighbors for more than a thousand years?Combined with the history at that time and analyzing the compiling intention of Kojiki and Nihon Shoki,Xwe can see that Kojiki and Nihon Shoki do not have the distinction between internal and external as advocated by Japanese scholars, and they are both oriented towards Japan(both are internal). Only in terms of the hypothetical readership and the specific focus of the compilation intentions,Kojiki and Nihon Shoki are different, but they are essentially the same. They were all meant to consolidate the centralized state centered on the emperor and to record ancient Japanese history.
