In early New England, livestock such as cattle and hogs played a central role in the success of colonial settlements. However, the proliferation of these animals led to disputes over land use, property rights, and political authority, while exacerbating tensions between colonists and Native Americans. The encroachment of colonists’ livestock into Native cornfields, coupled with Native hunting practices that threatened the animals, fueled conflict between the two groups. As Native Americans took up ranching themselves, these tensions escalated. One notable episode occurred in 1669,when King Philip, leader of the Wampanoag, clashed with the town of Portsmouth over grazing rights,an event colloquially known as the Hog Island episode. These disputes ultimately contributed to the outbreak of King Philip’s War and illustrate how the introduction of domesticated animals significantly changed the relationship between Native peoples and European settlers.
