In recent years,Belgium has made remarkable progress in low-carbon development through the implementation of a number of policies and strategies, which have strongly promoted the transformation of the energy structure and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Belgium’s National Energy and Climate Plan 2021-2030 and Long-Term Energy and Climate Strategy(LTS2050)set the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050,covering multiple sectors such as power, industry, transport, construction and agriculture. In order to achieve these goals,Belgium has increased the development of renewable energy sources, especially wind, solar photovoltaic and biomass energy. Belgium’s CO2 emissions have been declining since 2004,falling to 8.961 billion tons in 2022,36% less than their peak in 1979. Despite this, fossil fuels still dominate Belgium’s energy mix. To achieve carbon neutrality by 2050,Belgium needs to further reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and accelerate the energy transition, especially in the electrification and energy efficiency of the industrial and building sectors. A series of measures taken by Belgium have laid a solid foundation for the development of its low-carbon economy and provided important lessons for the world to achieve carbon neutrality.
