The Joseon Dynasty has a unique history of map development,in which the depiction of the Chinese ocean reflects the ancient Korean scholars’ understanding of the Chinese ocean. The geographical knowledge and worldview of the Chinese Yuan Dynasty was accepted in the early days of the founding of the Joseon Dynasty. The portrayal of the ocean in the map reflected the active maritime activities and the maritime influence of the Chinese Yuan Dynasty. The map of the Joseon Dynasty in the middle period reflects the closed foreign policy during the Ming Dynasty in China and the scholars’ respect for the Ming Dynasty, then the scope of the Chinese ocean depicted in the map of the Joseon Dynasty was reduced. Although the Korean scholars did not completely deviate from the old-world view, but the marine information in the maps expanded to the South China Sea due to the increase in maritime exchanges and the influence of the Western Chinese world map after the middle of the Joseon Dynasty. The maps of North Korea had reflected relatively accurate and complete Chinese marine geographic information at the end of the Joseon Dynasty owing to for completely departed from traditional map making methods and geographic thoughts, and accepted western geographic thoughts and map making methods.
