In recent years, with thegrowth of domestic coffee market, the development of Yunnan coffee industry has garnered increasing attention. Coffee,as an image rich in cultural significance,is imbued with attributes such as exoticness, modernity, inclusiveness, and openness. On this basis, the unique time autonomy, mobility, and community aspects of the coffee industry have led more and more women to enter the field. Based on in-depth field interviews, this paper attempts to use discourse analysis methods to examine the socioeconomic status of women working in Yunnan coffee industry. This study found that although women in the coffee industry are still profoundly influenced by gender role stereotypes―specifically the notion of “men as breadwinners, women as homemakers” traditional barriers for women in social settings, and latent binary gender roles, however, the high income, time autonomy, and social expansiveness of the coffee industry all contribute to maintaining the socioeconomic status of women and breaking through traditional gender role constraints. From a regional comparative perspective, the experiences of Southeast Asian countries in supporting women’s development in the coffee industry are worth learning from.
