On August 30,2023,a military coup occurred in Gabon,a Central African country. On the day of the coup,Gabonese officials announced that then President Ali Bongo had once again won the presidential election. The military successfully staged a coup by exploiting public dissatisfaction with long-term family rule, election fraud, poor governance, and economic and social development. The coup in Gabon is the latest in a series of coups sweeping through French speaking countries in Africa since 2020,indicating that the “coup epidemic” is continuing to spread. This coup is seen as a new setback for France and its influence in Africa has attracted high attention from the international community. After successfully seizing power, coup leader Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema became the interim president, formed a transitional government, and initiated the transition process. At the same time,Nguema frequently conducts foreign visits to gain political legitimacy and break free from international isolation. The political transition in Gabon has made some progress in the past six months, but still faces great uncertainty. At the same time,Gabon’s diplomatic actions have begun to yield results, which will help the country return to regional organizations and resume international cooperation.
