Regardless of various difficulties,Lu Youbai encouraged by the May Fourth movement created Black Tide Monthly in Shanghai in August 1919 whose columns were composed of comment, monograph, literature and document with the goal to awaken the masses to protect China’s territory and sovereignty. A lot of papers from some scholars including Guo Moruo,Xie Jinqing and Dai Jitao were published in this academic journal to analyze the Sino-Japanese relationship,to predict the general trend of the Eastern Asia conditions, and to dissect Japan’s domestic problems such as politics, economy, army, culture, education and religion dependent on rich materials in Japanese as well as personal experiences in Japan. There were some different opinions among the articles of this journal on how to resist Japan’s invasion. Although Black Tide Monthly had to terminate after three issues in January 1920 for lack of fund,it was the first academic journal to focus on Japan since 1912,playing a breakthrough role in the Japan research’s specialization, subjectization and systematization in Modern China.
