This paper aims to introduce the journey that the International Research Center for Japanese Studies (Nichibunken/IRCJS) has taken in the 36 years since its establishment. On the basis of reviewing and confirming the background and philosophy of its establishment,it attempts to sort out the changes in research tendencies during the development of the Nichibunken and explore its reason. At the same time,a brief explanation will be given of the relationship between the academic activities of the Nichibunken and the development of Japanese studies in China,as well as the ongoing new academic attempts such as the “Consortium for Global Japanese Studies”. It is hoped that by sorting out the Japanese studies of the Nichibunken and its external exchanges,it will reflect the development status of Japanese studies that emerged in Japan after the 1980s and the problems it faces,so as to provide some in for mation for constructing Japanese studies with Chinese characteristics.
