Abstract

During the period of Japanese occupation of Joseon (1910-1945),the Governor-General of Joseon(Korea) took over Kyujanggak (library) and its collection of books belonging to the Lee’s royal family of Joseon Dynasty. In order to assimilate the people of the Korean Peninsula into second-class people of the Japanese Emperor and eliminate their anti-Japanese and independent consciousness, the Japanese Colonial Authorities introduced many traditional Chinese classics, edited and published lots of books in Chinese that beautified colonial rule and tampered with historical facts as well as prohibited the dissemination of books that contradicted its enslaved rule. The Catalogue of Books in Chinese Published during the Japanese Occupation of Joseon reflects the overview of Chinese books circulating on the Korean Peninsula during that period. It also serves as a supplement to the study of cataloging and indexing in related fields, and is an important reference tool for the study of the Japanese colonial history and the history of Korean independence movement. In the cracks of the strict publishing censorship system of the Japanese Colonial Authorities, the dissemination of Chinese books (including banned books) exposed the colonial assimilation and ideological constraints of the Governor-General of Joseon, and on the other hand demonstrated the spirit of independence and rebuilding country among the people of the Peninsula,as well as continued the cultural exchanges between China and the Korean Peninsula.
