Hakata merchants served an essential role in the circulation in Northeast Asia of Ming ceramics and Chosŏn ceramics in the 15th to 16th centuries. Hakata merchants were involved in the ceramic trade in the early 15th century when the Ryukyu islanders monopolized and manipulated the ceramics trade market to the Japanese archipelago. As a result of a decrease in the circulation of Chinese Longquan celadon,Hakata merchants disguised themselves as Ryukyuan envoys and provided Chosŏn’s Buncheng stoneware to Japan market as a substitute for Chinese celadon. The participation of Hakata merchants in the ceramic trade not only presents the specific transformation of ceramic trade in Northeast Asia, but also demonstrates the transformation and change of the value of trade ceramics in specific cultural contexts.
