Since the new government began dismantling the apartheid system in 1994,the South African education system has undergone significant reforms, with a focus on addressing issues of educational equity and quality, particularly for historically marginalized black communities. A key initiative of the new South African education reform process has been the development of a series of education assessment policies aimed at promoting equity and enhancing quality. The development and evolution of these education assessment policies reveal their impact on educational practices. Overall, the series of education assessment policies in the new South Africa have addressed the most glaring issues of educational equity under the apartheid regime. However, due to the emphasis on continuous assessment and national assessment tests as key benchmarks for reforming classroom learning and teaching practices, the new assessment policies tend to hinder the transition towards assessment methods that prioritize improvement in learning outcomes.
