Tsurumi Shunsuke’s analyses on “pragmatism” paid attention to not only introduction to the American philosophical theories, but also studies on “pragmatism” in Japan. Besides its original meanings,in Japan,“pragmatism” could also mean “Japanese way of understanding and application of pragmatism”,or “thoughts that could be considered as pragmatism even before the American philosophy”,or “a methodology,an idea or an ideal which is beyond the border of the US or Japan”. Tsurumi argued that pragmatism should refrain from degenerating into dogma or ideology, and that pragmatism should be put into practice within everyday life. According to his analyses, critiques and practices,Tsurumi’s “pragmatism” suggested a methodology of “trying to open a channel for dialogue among thought systems by affecting the daily reality in our lives”. He and Maruyama Masao showed diversity as well as sympathy with the point of view on “pragmatism”.
