The Japanese government emphasizes that the publication of a new era name “Reiwa” is based on Japanese classic Preface to Plum Blossom in the Manyoshu,indicating a strong sense of “de-Sinicization” among Japanese government,academic circles and even the folk scholars. However,the Preface to Plum Blossom in the Manyoshu is deeply influenced by Zhang Heng’s Gui Tian Fu(To Live in Seclusion),Wang Xizhi’s Lanting Xu(Preface to the Orchid Pavilion),and Luo Binwang’s Qiu Ri Yu Qun Gong Yan Xu(Preface to Autumn and the Group Banquet),and has distinctive Chinese cultural traces. The new era name “Reiwa” implies that conservative forces such as Shinzo Abe intend to use Japanese classics to showcase Japanese characteristics and promote political demands for constitutional amendments through national cultural identity. In the future,it is necessary to pay attention to the significance of classics to modernity,while being wary of the political intentions behind metaphors.
