From June to August,1899,Zhang Taiyan went to Japan for the first time. Regarding this trip, the Japanese guide Tatemori Ko(馆森鸿)made a detailed record, called “Si Er Fei Bi”(似而非笔),which was serialized on Taiwan Daily News “Leaf Cage” column from October 1 to November 10,1899. The content of the record connects Zhang Taiya’s communication with Japanese during his stay in Taiwan and his participation in the Fast Asia Times(亚东时报)after returning to Shanghai. It is an indispensable material for understanding Zhang Taiyan’s academic and thought during this period, and also a portrayal of the diversified exchanges between China and Japan in the late 19th century. In terms of poetry and prose,it describes the meeting between Zhang Taiyan and the advocates of ancient poetry in the Japanese Chinese poetry circle. This stimulated ideological resonance and deepened the understanding of the differences between China and Japan. In terms of academics, the main topic is about Confucian classics. When talking with western scholars and contacting western learning in Japan,Zhang Taiyan is always facing the conflict between new learning and old learning. In terms of political commentary,it sorts out the origin of the “returning the warships” rumors and the reporting attitudes of both China and Japan, revealing the expectations and vigilance of Chinese intellectuals including Zhang Taiyan towards Japan during this period.
