自2022年6月时任苏格兰民族党领导人斯特金宣布将寻求举行第二次苏格兰独立公投以来，苏格兰民族党接连陷入困境和混乱之中。首先，第二次独立公投缺乏合法性的致命缺陷最终导致该计划胎死腹中。随后苏格兰民族党又陷入《性别承认改革（苏格兰）法案》引发的巨大争议，遭遇领导人变更的动荡以及面临可能存在的财务丑闻的冲击。这些都不可避免地对该党的政治形象和活动能力造成了负面影响。对于新一届领导层而言，维持该党在选举中的优势才是目前最紧迫的要务，因而在短期内实现苏格兰独立这一目标或将被搁置。
Since the then leader of the Scottish National Party （SNP），Nicola Sturgeon，announced in June 2022 that she would seek a second Scottish independence referendum，the SNP has been mired in troubles and chaos. First，the lack of legitimacy of the proposed second independence referendum eventually led to the plan’s demise. Then the SNP faced the huge controversy caused by the Gender Recognition Reform （Scotland） Bill，the turmoil of leadership change，and possible financial scandals. These have inevitably had a negative impact on the party’s political image and ability to function. For the new leadership，maintaining the party’s advantage in elections is the most urgent priority at present，so the goal of achieving Scottish independence in the short term may be shelved for a certain period of time.
