In 2022,New Zealand’s domestic politics and foreign policy were influenced by Russia-Ukraine conflict and the rivalry between the United States and China. After New Zealand opened its borders and changed its COVID-19 policy, the serious inflation and rising crime rate in the country became the main domestic focus. People’s confidence in the Labour government continued to decline, and the opposition National Party’s support rate surpassed that of the Labour Party. In terms of diplomacy, while emphasizing the traditional multilateral cooperation and Pacific Island countries principles,New Zealand revisited the value-based principle. New Zealand would possibly speak out more on human rights issues in near future. Meanwhile,New Zealand emphasised the stability of economic relations and the diversification of markets. Although New Zealand was more inclined to agree with traditional security partners on security issues,it still strived to achieve a balance between security relations and economic relations. In general,New Zealand’s foreign policy is more driven by the need to stabilise the economy and increase government support from its domestic politics.
