Abstract

In the eighth century, the Byzantine or Tazig physician Biji Tsampashilaha crossed Serindia and came into Tibet, whence spread down the medical codex entitled as Biji's Poti Khaser. In this book, there appear some medicine terms in Tibetan obviously far from the Sanskrit etymology. Based on it,this paper furthers some etymological approaches to the following items:the Tibetan medicine terms for musk and for goethite could be traced back to the Inner Asian Turco-Mongolic etymons and the ones for pyrite and for cinnabar back to the Graeco-Coptic etymons as well as the one for magnetite back to the Old Babylonian etymon. Against the background of Galenic medical system in Hellenic world and together with the explanation of the proper names Biji and Tsampashilaha, the deciphered etymology of the five medicine terms in Tibetan is indicative of the historical fact that the greater Near Eastern medical thesaurus in the classical periods had been transmitting along the Silk Road eastwards into the Tibetan medical system, with the continual absorption of the Egyptian,Greek,Turco-Mongolic medical achievements.
